A member of the cabbage family, this root vegetable from the Peruvian Andes looks like a little turnip. It’s been harvested for centuries, was famously eaten by Inca warriors before they went into battle and was so highly prized it was used as a form of payment for Spanish taxes.
It is a rich source of fatty acids, amino acids and complex carbohydrates, and also contains alkaloids that nourish the endocrine system. It’s said to be an aphrodisiac that can maintain hormonal balance in post-menopausal women, and to also used to treat stress and tow energy.
Studies performed in men have shown. It can improve semen quality and heighten libido. This is a potent phytoestrogen, and excellent for easing hot flushes during the perimenopause. Women who have had any form of hormonal cancers should treat it with caution.
