Soya - A Top 10 Superfood
Posted by Wendy
Once seen as the exclusive preserve of hairy-armpitted vegetarians, soya and soy products are now the superfood of choice for several glamour icons, including Victoria Beckham and Gwyneth Paltrow. Soya beans contain complete proteins, which are usually found only in meat (hence its popularity with vegans), lots of fiber and no cholesterol. It’s also low in saturated fats.
It is reputed to lower cholesterol, reduce the risks of osteoporosis and may ease menopausal symptoms. There is also some evidence that it may protect against prostate cancer.
It is widely available as tofu or soy milk (although soy sauce doesn’t have such beneficial effects). It’s the ultimate phytoestrogen, which makes it excellent for women. But choose organic soya, as there are questions of safety in the long-term consumption of any soya product that has been genetically modified.
